After Paying $99, Installing The Beta Is Simple

by Lidia Lucovic

For those interested in accessing Apple’s latest features ahead of the general public, Apple’s developer beta software program offers an option, albeit at a cost. Developer betas have been available for some time, providing app developers with the opportunity to evaluate how their applications will perform with operating system changes.

Through this, companies like Apple can identify any issues or flaws before the software is released to the public. However, it is important to bear in mind that developer beta releases can be unstable and risky, and it is advisable to avoid installing them on your primary device. Nevertheless, those willing to take a risk or have a secondary device can experience upcoming features by installing a developer beta release. Since the release of iOS 16.4, any registered Apple Developer can install developer beta software updates with minimal effort. Unfortunately, the update removed the configuration profiles, so registering as an Apple Developer is the only option for installing a developer beta update. The good news is that anyone with an Apple ID can register as an Apple Developer for an annual fee of $99.

To register as an Apple Developer, users should visit the company’s developer website and click on the ‘Account’ tab. After signing in with the Apple ID associated with the products they plan to enroll in the developer beta software program, users will be presented with the ‘Apple Developer Agreement,’ which they must read and agree to in order to register as a developer. Depending on the intended use of their Apple Developer account, users should read this contract carefully. After selecting the checkbox to agree, they should click the blue ‘Submit’ button.

Once completed, the user will be directed to their developer account page, even if they haven’t yet enrolled in the Apple Developer program. Next, users should click the blue ‘Enroll Today’ button and provide personal information as prompted. They will then be asked to select the type of entity they represent, with the ‘Individual’ option being the appropriate choice if none of the other options apply. Users should then agree to another legal agreement and proceed to pay the $99 fee, selecting whether the membership will renew automatically each year.

After successfully registering as an Apple Developer, installing a developer beta software update is a simple process. Users should ensure that the same account registered as an Apple Developer is signed in to the device that will receive the update. Then, they can navigate to Settings and select ‘Software Updates.’ Under the ‘Automatic Updates’ tab, users will find a new option labeled ‘Beta Updates.’ After tapping this option, they can select either Off, Developer Beta, or Public Beta. Once a selection is made, available updates will appear as usual on the Software Updates page. Although users must now pay Apple a $99 annual fee to try out a developer beta, the process is relatively straightforward.
