Effortlessly Send and Receive Faxes from Your Mac and PC

by Lidia Lucovic

eFax is an exceptional tool for sending faxes from your computer, particularly if you require international or toll-free US numbers. Although the absence of a dedicated Mac desktop app is regrettable, the web version functions seamlessly. Additionally, the Windows desktop app has limitations, so its absence isn’t a significant loss.

  • Easy to send and receive faxes
  • Toll free US numbers
  • Good mobile apps

  • Pricey compared to other services
  • Requires phoning to cancel contract
  • No Mac app
  • No native M1 or M2 Mac app

As fax machines become obsolete, online faxing has taken over and eFax has emerged as a top choice for sending faxes from Mac and PC computers.

With eFax, sending faxes is easy and convenient from any device, including internationally.

This review explores how eFax operates to send faxes from your Mac and identifies some of its standout features in comparison to other services.

eFax offers a variety of features, but some of its key advantages include:

  • Toll Free Numbers in the USA
  • Local Phone Numbers
  • Lifetime Fax Storage
  • Electronic Signatures
  • Connection To Third Party Cloud Storage Solutions

eFax Pricing

eFax provides two pricing tiers: eFax Plus, which costs $15.83 per month and includes 150 pages for sending and receiving, and eFax Pro, which costs $20.83 per month and offers 200 pages for both sending and receiving.

It’s worth noting that eFax has separate limits for sent and received pages, which is different from some services that pool the total allocation. Any pages beyond the limit will incur a cost of 10 cents per page. For international fax sending, the cost varies depending on the carrier and fax number, with rates going up to 40 cents per page for Australia. Also, international faxes count as two sent faxes.

Setting up each eFax number incurs a one-time fee of $10, which is common among online fax providers but some may not charge at all.

While eFax does offer a free trial, it’s important to remember to cancel the trial by phone after it ends to avoid being charged for a full subscription month.

How To Setup eFax

Upon starting eFax, you have the option to select a fax number from 40 different countries, including the US, or to set up a toll-free US number. A toll-free number is particularly useful if you want to present a more professional image, expand your business reach beyond your current area, or make it easier for potential clients to contact you at no cost to them.

While the interface may appear somewhat outdated, it remains clear and functional. Some features, such as adding attachments, could be more straightforward, but with a few fax transmissions under your belt, you’ll become accustomed to it.

The inbox provides a comprehensive overview of the faxes you’ve received:

The eFax mobile app boasts a more contemporary and user-friendly interface compared to the web version, likely due to the increasing number of people using smartphones to send faxes on-the-go.

If you’re already using fax numbers with another service, eFax allows you to keep the same numbers when you switch to their service. However, eFax does not support vanity fax numbers, such as “1-800-FAXME”.

You can easily manage and edit your contacts, as well as view your entire fax list, which eFax stores indefinitely until you delete your account. You can tag faxes and sort them into specific folders for organization.

eFax enables you to send faxes to up to 50 recipients, complete with a cover letter and attachments up to 20MB in size. If you need to send larger files, eFax offers Fusemail, a service that supports online storage of up to 3GB.

With the signature editor, you can add your signature to the end of faxes. Additionally, eFax uses OCR scanning software to make faxes searchable by keywords, providing accurate results when searching for specific faxes or details within a fax.

Sending Faxes via eMail with eFax

Most top fax services now allow users to send faxes directly from their email account, without the need to open a fax client separately. eFax also offers this feature and automatically sends copies of faxes to up to 5 different email addresses of your choice. To use this feature, simply add the fax number to the email address field and add the “@efaxsend.com” extension at the end.

You can also specify the format in which you want to receive your faxes – PDF, EFX, or TIFF. We recommend using PDF or TIFF as EFX is a proprietary format used by eFax and can only be opened within the eFax system. If you want to take your faxes with you or share them with others, PDF makes it much easier.

eFax Desktop Apps

The eFax desktop app is only available for Windows, but the web version works perfectly well on Mac. However, Mac users aren’t missing out on much because the desktop app is limited to sending faxes only. It doesn’t sync with the web version to display all of your incoming faxes.

On the other hand, the mobile apps are slick, and the iOS version is excellent if you want to send faxes from your iPhone or iPad.

Your emails can be signed electronically using eFax, whether you’re on your desktop or mobile device.

Is eFax Secure?

eFax offers a range of security features to protect your faxes and communications, including 128-bit SSL encryption for all transfers, and password-protected PDF files.

While eFax does not offer two-factor authentication or verification, it does provide a passcode option and SSL encryption to enhance security.

It’s worth noting that the Pro and Plus versions of eFax are not HIPAA compliant, so they may not be suitable for healthcare faxing. However, the Enterprise version is HIPAA compliant and offers a secure solution for healthcare providers who need to send and receive sensitive patient information via fax.
