Cyberpunk 2077’s “I Fought The Law” quest was spoiled before it even began.

Many of Cyberpunk 2077’s intriguing side quests have surprising plot twists, but one mission, “I Fought The Law,” has its ending revealed through a not-so-subtle reference in a clue as soon as the player receives it from Elizabeth Peralez over the holo.

This mission is one of the few that explores the law enforcement side of Night City, but in the upcoming Phantom Liberty DLC, players will have the opportunity to work for the NUSA as a top-secret government operative. The DLC will also introduce new characters such as Solomon Reed, portrayed by the famous English actor Idris Elba, and will feature the return of Johnny Silverhand. CD Projekt Red’s biggest expansion to date, the DLC is highly anticipated. Until then, players can enjoy River Ward’s quest line and NCPD scanner hustles, but with the “I Fought The Law” mission’s spoiler, the options may seem limited.

The Cyberpunk 2077 quest “I Fought The Law” is a reference to a song of the same name, originally written by the Crickets and later popularized by the Bobby Fuller Four and The Clash. The memorable chorus of the catchy rock tune, “I fought the law and the law won,” may have led those familiar with the song to approach the quest with distrust and predict its outcome.

During the course of their investigation, V and River, the latter of whom is a character who many players felt deserved better treatment, discover evidence of foul play in the death of former Mayor Rhyne. To their surprise, they find that one of the main culprits was a fellow NCPD officer named Harold Han, who had been right under their noses the entire time. When River confronts Han and threatens to take the matter to higher-ups, Han remains unfazed and warns against escalating the issue. He is confident that corrupt law enforcement will take his side due to self-interest, and he claims to have acted to protect his NCPD family.

The “I Fought The Law” quest in Cyberpunk 2077 concludes similarly to the eponymous song, with the law emerging victorious and V and River unable to alter the outcome despite their best efforts. While this allusion may be a fascinating Easter egg, those familiar with the song will anticipate the quest’s resolution even before commencing the investigation. Whether this is a gratifying homage or an unwelcome spoiler is subjective. Nevertheless, for a quest that seeks to transform Cyberpunk 2077 into a spy thriller, it appears to lack much enigma.
