Harry Potter: 15 Slytherins Who Made Positive Contributions to the Wizarding World

by Lidia Lucovic

The Slytherin house in Harry Potter is often viewed as the “evil” house due to its founder’s prejudiced beliefs. However, Salazar Slytherin chose admirable traits for his house such as ambition, resourcefulness, determination, and cleverness, which are not inherently bad. There have been several good Slytherin wizards who demonstrated these traits for the betterment of the Wizarding World.

For instance, Albus Potter, the son of Harry Potter, was sorted into Slytherin and ultimately helped save the Wizarding World in Harry Potter and The Cursed Child. Scorpius Malfoy, the son of Draco Malfoy, also played a crucial role in preventing Voldemort from returning. Despite their family names, both Albus and Scorpius proved that not all Slytherins or Malfoys are evil.

Even Lucius Malfoy, who committed terrible deeds, defected from the Death Eaters and provided valuable information to the Ministry of Magic after Voldemort’s downfall. Vincent Crabbe, one of Draco’s cronies, accidentally destroyed one of Voldemort’s Horcruxes while attempting to use a dangerous spell, ultimately aiding Harry in his quest.

Abraxas Malfoy, the father of Lucius, was a respected wizard at Hogwarts and likely not evil, as evidenced by his popularity among the sometimes-questionable Horace Slughorn. However, his son was ultimately led down a dark path.

Overall, these examples show that traits associated with Slytherin, when used for good, can have a positive impact on the Wizarding World.

Draco Malfoy grew out of his arrogant and cruel behavior and deserves credit for it. He experienced trauma as a Death Eater, but he changed his views towards Muggles and Muggle-born witches and wizards, and raised his son not to look down on them. Phineas Black distinguished himself from his purity-obsessed family by supporting Muggle rights, and his father disowned him. Horace Slughorn, though manipulated by Tom Riddle, came clean about his involvement in revealing the secrets of Horcruxes, helping Harry Potter defeat Voldemort. Narcissa Malfoy prioritized her son’s safety and lied to Voldemort, ultimately leading to Voldemort’s destruction.

Leta Lestrange sacrificed her life to provide a distraction for her friends, Theseus and Newt Scamander, to escape from Grindelwald. Andromeda Tonks married a Muggle-born wizard, was disowned by her family, and joined the Order of the Phoenix. Regulus Black stole one of Voldemort’s Horcruxes and attempted to destroy it. Severus Snape’s secret loyalty to Dumbledore and love for Lily Potter led him to do some good. Salazar Slytherin was one of the founders of Hogwarts, and despite his unjust notions and prejudices, shaped the school into what it would become.

The snakewood wand of Slytherin was found to have healing properties due to the tree that sprouted from it at Ilvermorny. Similarly, Jacob’s wand served a similar purpose in aiding him to save the Wizarding World. Despite not being considered a “good” Slytherin wizard, Jacob Kowalski played an integral role in thwarting Grindelwald’s plans, and his affiliation with the Harry Potter house cannot be disputed.
