Star Wars may be establishing the roots of Luke Skywalker’s most remarkable Force power, which he demonstrated in the climax of The Last Jedi.
Caution! This article includes SPOILERS for Star Wars #42.
Star Wars is finally shedding light on Luke Skywalker’s most remarkable Force power, which was showcased in The Last Jedi. The canonical comics reveal Luke’s self-taught training between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, using holocrons and sacred Jedi texts he discovered. However, it appears that his impressive power also stemmed from a significant friendship he formed as a young Jedi.
In The Last Jedi, Luke projected his consciousness through the Force from Ahch-To to the planet Crait, where the Resistance was in peril from Kylo Ren and the First Order. By keeping Ren and his forces occupied, he allowed Rey to rescue the survivors. This taxing effort resulted in Luke’s ultimate sacrifice as he became one with the Force. Therefore, Star Wars is now establishing the origins of Luke’s impressive power and when he acquired this ability in the established Star Wars timeline.
Luke Skywalker utilized a technique known as the Fallanassi Technique for his Force Projection.
An Ancient Group Of Force Adepts
Luke’s Force projection, which appeared before the entire First Order, cleverly exploited Kylo Ren’s anger, keeping him distracted while he ordered his walkers to attack the Jedi Master who was not actually present on Crait. The Rise of Skywalker’s visual dictionary confirmed that this technique, also known as Similfuturus, was first developed by the Fallanassi, a group of Force adepts who were once allies of the Jedi Order before the Empire’s reign of terror.
The Fallanassi not only developed this powerful Force projection technique, where a Jedi channels their energy and spirit from the Living Force into the Cosmic Force, but they were also highly skilled in kyber purification. During the time when the Jedi Order protected the galaxy before the rise of the Galactic Empire, they would commission the Fallanassi to heal the red kyber crystals that had been corrupted by the Sith Lords.
Luke’s initial encounter with the Fallanassi has just been depicted in Star Wars
Luke Met Gretta During His Jedi Training After Empire Strikes Back
The remarkable abilities of the Fallanassi are particularly noteworthy in light of Luke’s experiences between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, which are chronicled in the ongoing Star Wars comics. During his travels, Luke encountered a Fallanassi named Gretta, who, along with her aunt, is currently assisting him in learning how to heal a red kyber crystal given to him by Doctor Cuata, a kyber crystal specialist who worked on the Death Star before defecting from the Empire. It remains to be seen what other teachings the Fallanassi may impart to Luke in future issues of the canonical series.
While some of the Fallanassi’s techniques were documented in the Jedi’s sacred texts, much of Luke’s training leading up to Return of the Jedi was unorthodox. Consequently, there are many practices and texts that he has yet to encounter. Learning from the Fallanassi themselves may be the ideal way for Luke to acquire one of his most potent Force abilities. However, given that the Fallanassi were based on Jedha, which was destroyed by the Empire in Rogue One, there may not be many of them left.
Luke has always been open to learning from other traditions of the Force
Like The Church of the Force
Luke has always been open to learning from other Force traditions, as evidenced by his search for surviving Jedi Order connections and influences in the aftermath of the original trilogy. One such example is the Church of the Force, a group of non-Force sensitives who still believed in the Jedi’s teachings. They assisted Luke in recovering Jedi texts and artifacts during the New Republic Era as he worked to rebuild the Jedi Order.
Lor San Tekka, a member of the Church of the Force, helped Luke locate important relics and the First Jedi Temple on Ahch-To, where he eventually became a hermit after Ben Solo’s fall to the dark side. Despite this setback, Luke’s willingness to learn from the Fallanassi aligns with his overall Jedi journey in the Star Wars universe, making it highly probable that they will be the ones to teach him his incredible Last Jedi ability as the canonical comics continue.
